Pickleball is serious business. At least, that’s what an increasing crowd of disgruntled residents living near pickleball courts in Singapore believe, as noise complaints continue to soar alongside the game’s popularity. But if you want to maintain a rapport with the folks in your block while trying your hand at the country’s hottest new sport, you’ll find no shortage of courts around the island where you can dink in peace. So let’s pack a paddle, call up a friend, and let’s get pickling!

01 • Play! Pickle

If you’re dipping your toes into the world of pickleball, the folks at Play! Pickle will be more than happy to show you the ropes. The group’s four courts across Singapore (along with a new Serangoon location opening in November) all offer lessons for every age group and skill level, along with paddle rentals for a small additional fee. Want to see if you can out-serve a child? Then sign up for a family class with your kids, and bond with your folks as you all try to figure out what the heck a half-volley groundstroke is together.

If this ain’t your first rodeo, Play! Pickle also organises frequent open play sessions, where you’ll be matched against players of a similar skill level. It’s a great way to meet new people in a low-stakes environment, and the sweat lost over a good serve is as good a social lubricant as any. Once you’ve made some new friends (or maybe rivals?), there’s even a great place for banh mi nearby, so you can refuel after your sessions while chatting over match strategy.

02 • ActiveSG sports hall

No matter where you reside in Singapore, there’s likely to be an ActiveSG centre near you. Ergo, there’s always an opportunity to play pickleball. While not all of these centres contain dedicated pickleball courts (though more and more are meeting the rising demand), the sport’s versatility, small space demands, and the government's recent distribution of $100 in ActiveSG credits mean that fashioning up a game in most of its sports halls is easy. For those in want of more structured fun, the Singapore Pickleball Association also hosts many of its events in ActiveSG facilities.

03 • MBP Sports

If your mental image of a pickleball player is that of a hip yuppie who serves up volleys in between closing deals in the CBD and sipping on matcha lattes, MBPSports is where you go to confirm your biases. Just one match in either of its rooftop downtown locations right in the heart of Singapore’s all-too-famous skyline is all it takes to feel like the very picture of sophistication. Plus, the fact that it’s right next to some of the country’s newest malls certainly doesn’t hurt.

Thankfully, court rental here remains mercifully proletarian, with 2 hours of play time (including racket and ball rentals) going for $20 during designated Pickleball Nights. If Pickleball isn’t your speed, it’s also one of the few places in Singapore where you can get a game of Padel going.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy pickleball equipment?

Most Decathlons keep a ready stock of pickleball equipment. Failing that, many of the courts featured here have their own selection of paddles and balls for purchase.

How easy is pickleball?

Pickleball can be picked up by anyone, regardless of your age or physical fitness. Thanks to the small court size, slower game pace, and less bouncy balls, the game is easier to understand, and most players can maintain consistent rallies within a couple of sessions. It’s so easy, even your grandpa can do it!

How can I reserve a pickleball court?

Pickleball courts in Singapore typically have their own apps and websites for reservations. But jockeying for spots can be a hassle, so it can’t hurt to look into apps such as Reclub, which link you up to local sports clubs and open sessions with available slots.

Why is pickleball so popular now?

Pickleball has a low barrier to entry, while still maintaining a high skill ceiling. Unlike tennis, where players can take months to get their serves, well, serviceable, many pickleball players can reliably start lobbing balls within an hour of guided instruction. And with a playing area ¼ the size of tennis courts, even people who might think of themselves as unathletic can engage in strategic play early on.

See you in the crowd,

Amanda 💙
