Planning a drive across the Causeway? Heads up — starting July 1, all Singapore-registered vehicles must have a valid Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) before crossing into Malaysia. Without one, you might find yourself slapped with an RM300 fine (ouch!).
This reminder comes courtesy of Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who announced on June 4 that the rule will be enforced to ensure foreign-registered vehicles follow local traffic rules and play fair on Malaysian roads.
Here’s everything you need to know about getting a VEP for your vehicle
Who needs to apply for a VEP?
All foreign-registered vehicles — private and commercial — are required to register and obtain a VEP before entering Malaysia. This includes motorcycles.
How to apply for a VEP?
First things first, ensure you’ve installed the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app and created an account. Then, you’ll need this head over to the official VEP portal. Either the vehicle owner or an appointed representative can apply for the VEP.
- Create an account with your details, and set up a username and password. A confirmation email will be sent after.
- The email will guide you to log in at vepams.jpj.gov.my to complete the registration.
- Once you’ve logged in to vepams.jpj.gov.my, you’ll need to upload several documents such as a valid motor insurance, a copy of your NRIC (or passport), and the Certificate of Entitlement (COE).
Once everything’s submitted, sit tight. You’ll receive an email when your application gets approved.
Your next step is to choose how you want to receive your VEP-RFID tag. You’ll have the option to pick either a courier delivery straight to your address or self-collection at a VEP centre in Johor Bahru.
Your final step is to make the payment online. The RFID tag costs RM10 (not including delivery and service fees), and payment can be made with a credit card.
What do I do with the RFID tag?

If you opted to collect the tag in person, the folks at the VEP centre will help you attach the tag to your vehicle. If you had the RFID tag delivered, here’s what to do next:
- Hop back onto the VEP portal and acknowledge that you’ve received your tag. You’ll also need to enter the RFID serial number for validation.
- Next, stick the tag to your vehicle. Only stick it on the left headlamp of the passenger side, according to the instructions that come with the RFID tag.
- Make sure the surface is clean and dry before applying. Stick it horizontally on the left headlamp, and not on the curved part.
- Stick it at least 5 centimetres away from any metal parts of the car — that’s important for the tag to actually work.
And there you have it — everything you need to get your Vehicle Entry Permit sorted! Getting your RFID tag in place keeps you legal on Malaysian roads and fine-free. So, don’t wait until you’re stuck at the checkpoint and wondering how to get your VEP.
Happy travels,
Amanda 💙
