GetGo’s new Select category: Amanda and Ella Mae’s Kolo Mee hunt in the Volkswagen Golf without decals

Hey GetGoers, it’s Amanda! Last week, Ella Mae and I wanted 2 things: we were craving a hearty bowl of Kolo Mee and revving for a drive in the Volkswagen Golf that just landed in our fleet. Best of all, it comes without decals on the doors! Read on to follow us on our mini-adventure in the cutesy Golf.
For 2 people who work at GetGo, you’d think that we’d be less stoked about driving a car with no decals — but we were as excited as our GetGoers to experience the new Select category. The enthusiasm was obvious on my face when Ella Mae came to pick me up — because that’s the first time I saw our white GetGo car pull up with no visible decals anywhere. Having been around to see GetGo grow from its humble beginnings, I couldn’t help but beam with a sense of pride that we finally made this happen. 🤩
The car looked like any other car on the road — something that I needed a few extra seconds to get used to as I was so accustomed to seeing GetGo cars with their iconic decals all around.
✅ First look and vibe check
When I started walking around the car to admire the view, Ella Mae jokingly said that I looked like I was checking out my crush. She was right — I must’ve really fallen for the car’s cute yet sporty look. The lines and pillars that ran along the car had a clean design, while the wider grille in the front gave it a bold look. I particularly liked that the car retained its iconic hatchback and sculpted bumper features that are typical to many Volkswagen models.
💅🏻 The great indoors
Once I sat down in the car and buckled up for our drive, I occasionally glanced at the passenger seat side mirror to admire the no-decal doors. We really did blend in with all the other cars around us! 😲
One of the first things I noticed when I opened the car door was the plush and velvety seats. I found the stitch patterns that ran down on them a clever and playful take on the brand’s logo. Not only did the seats look appealing to the eyes, but they also added that extra touch of comfort to our drive.
The back seats were no less comfortable, with ample legroom and an aircon vent that seemed to whisper to backseat passengers, “You’ve not been forgotten”. Similar to the cockpit aircon, the rear aircon could be adjusted according to a passenger’s desired temperature or fan speed.
Ella Mae, our captain, told me that she found the Volkswagen Golf easy to drive. The steering wheel rolled as smoothly as butter, and all the important buttons she needed to navigate the car were within easy reach — including the Adaptive Cruise Control function, the infotainment system’s volume buttons, the lock and unlock button on the driver seat’s door, and more. She mentioned, however, that the gear required some initial fiddling before she could figure out how to use it — but it didn’t take her too long.
🎶 Ella Mae’s car concert, the infotainment system, and more
One of the best things about the Volkswagen Golf was that it was fairly easy to operate and manoeuvre. There was hardly any feature or function in the car that was daunting for first-time Golfers like us.
Similarly, navigating the infotainment system was also a breeze. Within just a few taps, Ella Mae got her favourite T-Swift songs blasting on the speakers and the directions to the restaurant pulled up on the screen.
Just below the aircon vent were 2 USB-C charging ports for those who need to quickly juice up their mobile devices while on the go.
The Volkswagen Golf’s mighty boot space
Make no mistake. Although the Volkswagen Golf looks like a cute hatchback from the outside, its boot space will surprise you.
To open the boot, gently pull the VW logo towards you — the door opens upwards to reveal a space that can easily fit 1 large suitcase and a few small bags. This is great news if you’re going on a full-day drive and have more belongings to bring along, doing a grocery run, or bringing home a small piece of furniture. Those who have ageing parents will also find this car useful as it’s easy to board and alight and to stow away any walking aid or wheelchair.
The hunt for a bowl of Kolo Mee
Motivated by our mutual love for good food, Ella Mae and I have driven out many times to hunt for the best chow all over the island. But this drive was truly memorable for us. Not only did we dare to step out of the office before lunchtime (don’t tell our manager), but driving a decal-free car made us feel like we owned the car — even if it was only for a few hours.
We headed to Traditional Sarawak Kolo Mee in Biopolis and ordered 2 sets of Classic Kolo Mee, which came with a drink of our choice.
I felt a little bittersweet right from the first bite as the authenticity of the taste made me miss the thriving town of Kuching. The last time I visited that lovely city was a few years ago while attending the world-renowned Rainforest World Music Festival.
The noodles were springy and coated with the deliciously seasoned oil unique to Kolo Mee. Our bowls also came with generous servings of minced meat and char siew. The portion filled our tummies just to the right degree and kept us full until our evening tea break. We later headed back to the office, all happy and cheerful and ready to end our work week strong.
The Volkswagen Golf in the new GetGo Select category promises a low-key carsharing experience for those who prefer a more understated look. It’s perfect for any occasion, whether you’re attending a business meeting, a friend’s wedding, or even for a leisurely weekday or weekend drive. We can’t wait for you to try it!
Happy zipping,
Amanda, Ella Mae, and Team GetGo 💙
