The age-old adage, “New Year, New Me” has proven true for some — but for most of us (no shame if this includes you), a single trip to the gym on the second day of January will be as close as we’ll get to achieving any of our goals for the new year.
Which begs the question, “Do New Year’s resolutions even work at all?”
Well, we say they can! This new year, give yourself a fresh start with some realistic, practical resolutions. We’ve compiled a list of New Year’s resolutions to help you celebrate what’s to come in 2022 and that you’ll actually want to keep.
01 • Spend more time with your loved ones
There’s nothing more valuable than quality time well spent with those we love, but it’s easy to get caught up with hectic schedules and completely miss out on chances to bond.
Assign yourself the task of setting aside at least one day a week to hang out with your loved ones, and we promise you won’t regret it. Whether you’re planning to head out to the beach together, try out a new skill at a workshop or simply have a meal at your favorite restaurant, you’re guaranteed to have a great time letting loose and catching up.

02 • Get up close and personal with nature

If you’ve always shunned the idea of being outdoors, this new year may be the time to change that mindset. Studies have shown that surrounding yourself with Mother Nature’s lush greenery is a great stress-reliever — so grab your activewear, slap on some sunscreen and go outside for some fresh air!

03 • Schedule more ‘me-time’
Just like our smartphones and other electronic devices, we each have our own battery life as well.
Give yourself some downtime to recharge over some self-care activities — whether it’s a day at the spa, retail therapy or a lazy day of Netflix in bed — you absolutely deserve to give yourself a break every now and then.
04 • Get that driving licence

This is the year you finally get around to getting your driving license! If you haven’t already achieved this milestone, stop putting it off and give yourself a push to complete those classes and ace that test.
Having a driving license opens up a whole new world of convenience — even if you aren’t looking to buy a car of your own, you can still rent a car and enjoy the #FreedomToDrive. If you’re 25 and above, you can even sign up with GetGo right after you’ve gotten your license!
05 • Support our local F&B scene
Our local F&B scene has been through so much during this pandemic, and it’s up to us to keep it going! Make it a point to eat or dabao from a local food store and show your support to the local joints that need it the most.
06 • Declutter your home

The start of a new year is the best time to get organized! Spend some time going through all that stuff you’ve accumulated lately, one room and closet at a time. For items that don’t spark joy (à la Marie Kondo), your best bet would be to give away or sell them to someone who may appreciate it more.
07 • Train your green thumb
Having plants in your living space is known to boost your mood and help alleviate stress. Not only that, they surely do add beauty too. Mark your new year by injecting some greens into your home and watch them grow and thrive as you nurture them.
If you’re planning on getting some new leafy friends for your home, check out The Green Corner at 53 Sungei Tengah Road. And a little bonus: enjoy 25% off your plants haul* when you flash your GetGo booking at the counter!

08 • Go on more road trips

Singapore may be a small country, but we still do have many scenic routes perfect for an in-city getaway. Taking the open road offers an opportunity to experience the natural and architectural beauty of Singapore, and you’ll definitely find solace in the wind blowing through your hair as you cruise along.
Some routes to check out would be the iconic Bayfront Avenue, Mount Faber Park and Raffles Marina Lighthouse.
3 failproof tips on how to follow through on your resolutions
01 • Keep your momentum going through habit stacking
Habit stacking is a practice where you form a new habit by connecting it to your existing one. For instance, if you’ve been meaning to water your plants every morning and you already have a habit of journaling in your green corner, why not make it a point to pick up the watering can without fail every time you’re done journaling?
This is a surefire method because you’re linking a new habit to an older one that’s already strongly established in your brain.
02 • Try to enjoy the process and don’t punish yourself
Say, your resolution is to run 5 kilometres every day. When you’re first starting out, you wouldn’t want to push yourself too hard or pick tricky terrains because those are going to signal to your brain that running is hard. Your brain may then end up associating negative memories to that activity. Instead, choose a distance and terrain that you’re comfortable with and gradually build your way through. You may just fall in love with your new habit before you know it!
03 • Use social media for accountability
If you’re on social media, this one’s something you may want to give a shot. Posting your new journey online can feel like a motivation to follow through, especially when words of encouragement start pouring in. And who knows? You may even inspire someone else along the way.
