Just a stone’s throw away from the MRT station is Yunos n Family, a stall in 724 Ang Mo Kio Central that’s been serving some of Singapore’s best mee rebus (boiled noodles) since 1965.

The stall has one of the most extensive selections of mee rebus in Singapore, including Mee Rebus Drumstick and Mee Rebus Babat (tripe). All of the mee rebus dishes are served with the family’s signature sweet sauce and topped with crunchy chilli for that extra kick. The stall also serves grilled-to-order satay, which is a perfect, smoky complement to any bowl of mee.

You don’t need to go to town or spend a bomb to eat something trendy. Magic Kitchen’s Thick Toasts recall the famous Shibuya honey toasts we keep seeing on Instagram.

Forgivingly, they aren’t so overwhelmingly huge as to leave diners with a too-full belly and a plate with half a brick of honey-drenched bread. The toasts come in egg mayo and honey butter sugar, both of which are generously portioned out so that each bite is flavourful and moist.

If you’re not one for bread, the 20-year old neighbourhood darling is also especially proud of its Laksa Chee Cheong Fun.

You’ve never had soya bean like this before. From gula melaka (palm sugar syrup) to bandung (rose syrup) and even peppermint, there seems to be very little that this family-run store won’t throw into their soya bean drinks.

Whatever genius guides their hand seems to be paying off for them, as their drinks and bean curd desserts can give any chain soya bean store a run for their money. Mercifully, their drinks also veer clear of the dreaded “cup loaded with too much ice” syndrome.

Located in Ang Mo Kio’s 628 Market, Sumo Fried Hokkien Mee serves everything you could possibly want for a perfect Hokkien Mee meal, including carrot cakes, fried oyster, and a homemade signature chilli sauce.

Of course, the actual Hokkien Mee here does not disappoint. The ingredients are fresh, the noodles absorb the sauce wonderfully, and the stock (boiled for 3 hours before serving) is rich and creamy. It’s no wonder how the stall has become a favourite food for Ang Mo Kio locals for over a decade.

Dare you challenge the mountain? Phuket Meat Mookata is renowned for its 1kg Meat Mountains, which are sure to make even the hungriest among us stop in their tracks.

These stalagmites of savouriness contain a rainbow of liberally seasoned pork and chicken, and are surrounded by a small moat of meatballs, sausages, and fishcakes doused in umami sauce. Bring friends.

For those of us that love the mookata life but don’t have black holes for stomachs, the stall also serves a la carte mookata, rice and noodle-based meals, and a generous range of side dishes.

If you’re talking about banh mi in Ang Mo Kio, there can only be one answer. Regarded as one of the best banh mi spots in Singapore, this unassuming stall shares a space with a small Vietnamese provisions store, so it really does feel like a tiny slice of Saigon was cut out and transplanted to Singapore.

No matter what you order, you’re in for a treat, as all the cold cuts used by the store are made according to a century-old family recipe. The meat, thankfully, doesn’t taste like it’s 100 years old, as all ingredients are made in-house, including the baguette and pate.

Their juicy oysters come in Mentaiko, Truffle, Sambal, Cheese, and Garlic. There are many ice cream places in Singapore, but only one of them bears the honour of being the country’s only mahjong-themed ice cream cafe. Wonders is decked out floor-to-ceiling in mahjong iconography, from the 13 in its logo (13 wonders is the name of a winning mahjong hand) to the neon 發 (fā) (prosperity) sign that draws your eye the second you enter.

The mahjong theming is more than a simple gimmick, as the ice cream here comes in flavours inspired by Chinese sweets. With flavours such as Pineapple Tart, Osmanthus Oolong, and a Chrysanthemum, Honey, and Cacao Nib mixture, one bite of the ice cream at Wonders is sure to bring to mind the sound of clacking tiles and hands shuffling against felt tabletops.

Despite its unassuming exterior and small capacity, you’ll want to reserve a seat here early. Shanghai Renjia (literally Shanghai Family) is a family-owned restaurant that serves — you guessed it, hand-made Shanghai comfort food.

The homely atmosphere and affordable dim sum have made this a favourite amongst Ang Mo Kio’s residents, who can count themselves lucky to live so close to one of Singapore’s best and only Sheng Jian Bao (pan fried pork bun) spots.

If you’re a fan of xiao long bao (steamed dumpling), this Shanghai take on the dish is a must-try, as the dish uses a similar concept of filling a dumpling with soup, but with a crispy exterior for a sharper contrast between the two textures.

Chef Neo Chee Yong started Social Smoker as a way to bring the lessons he learnt working at a San Francisco smokehouse back home. Alongside 2 chefs from the 3 Michelin-starred restaurant Zen, the 3 friends have created the ultimate American-inspired BBQ experience.

All of this restaurants’ meat is smoked with a $20,000 custom-built, wood-flavoured smoker, but the standout is the Beef Brisket, which is smoked for 12 hours and cooked Texas-style. This means you’re in for bites of salt-and-pepper crust that give way to fatty, rich meat.

If you’re looking for finer dining, the chefs’ Michelin experience shows itself more plainly in the Smoked Banana Tart, which has a nutty fragrance and feels like it could be another cafes’ signature all on its own.
