There are two things that Takashimaya Shopping Centre is famous for: food and books. I’m both a foodie and a bookworm, so you bet I know this place like the back of my hand! I love spending hours upon hours browsing through the books at Kinokuniya, then making my way down to B2 for some good food. This blog article collates all the best food spots at Takashimaya that I’ve tried over the years (plus some pricier options if you’re feeling fancy!)

01 • Unazen

(Photo: Unazen)

With rustic grey walls and a simple wooden door, Unazen seems like the kind of place your eyes would glance over easily. But take a closer look, and behind this 150-year-old Japanese sliding door is a secret haven for lovers of unagi, Japanese freshwater eel. Imported fresh from Japan, their premium eels are expertly grilled over high-grade binchotan charcoal until they’re crispy on the outside and still oh-so-soft on the inside.

02 • Hvala

(Photo: Hvala)

In the bustle and bustle of life, there’s rarely time to slow down. Hvala invites you to do just that: Slow. Down.

If you’re just as clueless as me, Hvala is actually pronounced as “fa-lah”, and means “thank you” in Croatian. Through carefully and delicately brewed teas, this modern teahouse gently lets you find calmness and gratitude in your surroundings. They have a partner farm in Japan and 5 ceremonial matchas to choose from, all with different flavour profiles and textures, so rest assured you’re in safe hands.

03 • Hazuki Kaisheki

(Photo: Hazuki Kaisheki)

Helmed by two Michelin-starred chefs, Hazuki Kaisheki is undoubtedly one of the best Japanese omakase restaurants in Singapore. This is sophistication at its finest — luxurious decor from Gucci and Kagami, as well as placemats made from 1,000-year-old cedar wood. Every single dish here is exquisite, with even the finest of details considered. Be it shiro miso from a heritage Kyoto maker or ultra-fresh wild-caught fish, Hazuki’s cuisine will definitely be unforgettable.

04 • Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice

(Photo: Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice)

Founded in 1987 by two friends fresh out of NS, Tiong Bahru Hainanese Chicken Rice is now celebrating 10 consecutive years of Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition (congratulations!). They have several stalls across Singapore, but their full-fledged restaurant concept in Takashimaya is a little different, featuring an expanded menu with oven-baked chicken, customisable rice options, and zi char-esque dishes. Whether you’re looking for classic homely chicken rice or feeling adventurous, this place has the meal for you.

05 • Mr. Bucket Chocolaterie

(Photo: Mr Bucket Chocolaterie)

Inspired by Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mr. Bucket Chocolaterie continues where the novel left off, imagining what the factory of grown-up Charlie Bucket could look like. At the core of their business is kindness, just like Charlie. This bean-to-bar chocolaterie specialises in sustainably-sourced cacao from all over Asia, ensuring the dignity and livelihoods of their cacao farmers.

Besides single-source chocolates from Sulawesi, Anamalai, and Panchor, they have some distinctly Singaporean flavours such as the Nasi Lemak Bon Bon and Kopi O Dark Chocolate. No gelatin is used in their recipes either, making their treats a halal-friendly indulgence.

Rituel’s first-ever overseas outlet has just opened at Takashimaya, and they come offering delicious pastries. This bakery-cafe crosses French culinary traditions and Japanese sensibilities for the best of both worlds, creating a tea room experience with cheerful hospitality and meticulously-crafted pastries.

Their Speciality Japanese Egg Danish Sandwich ($22) is an exclusive Singapore special, featuring fluffy Japanese scrambled eggs and creamy mushroom sauce in their signature multi-layered Danish pastry.

Fancy yourself a cuisine connoisseur? Indulge in gourmet food and premium coffee while appreciating artwork on the walls of TCC (The Connoisseur Concerto), an art boutique cafe that combines the best of cuisine and art. With an elegant, refined ambience that matches the sheer quality and freshness of their food, this restaurant is definitely on the costlier side, but it’s well worth the price.

08 • Maison Ladurée Paris

(Photo: Maison Ladurée Paris)

If you’ve ever tried baking macarons, you’d know just how frustratingly difficult they are. They’re just so delicate. So imagine my surprise when I found out that Maison Ladurée actually INVENTED the signature double-shell macaron in 1930!

The gourmet confectionery brand has a history dating all the way back to 1862, and they have the macaron down to an art form. 3 simple ingredients and 164 years of meticulous technique, no biggie.

Tag Espresso originally started out selling coffee capsules, but their coffee has been so well-loved that they’ve now established actual cafe outlets, one in Takashimaya and the other in Guoco Tower. What makes this local brand stand out from the others is their genuinely high-quality coffee, featuring a unique extraction technology and freeze crystallisation process which truly bring out the essence of each brew. 10 • UDON SHIN

(Photo: Deenise Glitz)

Freshly made, freshly cut, freshly boiled — the noodles at Udon Shin are a masterclass in technique and temperature control. Paired with a number of generous ingredients and gloriously rich umami broth, they’re unstoppable.

Notorious for 3-hour-long queues at their Tokyo flagship store, Udon Shin has just opened their first-ever international outlet right here in Takashimaya. Their signature Carbonara Udon ($24++) actually went viral a while ago! This dish is a rich, decadent delight that’s sure to leave you full and satisfied.

11 • Yonehachi

(Photo: Yonehachi)

This unique little stall in Takashimaya’s basement serves okowa, traditional Japanese glutinous rice mixed with ingredients such as chestnuts, red beans, seafood, and more. The rice itself is the star of the show here — Yonehachi uses premium grain varieties from northern Japan, and they’re all put on display steaming hot like a mixed rice stall.

You can opt to get the rice by itself for a quick takeaway snack, or settle into one of their booth seats for a homely, satisfying set meal with Hoji tea,  miso soup, and other side dishes.

12 • Tofu G

(Photo: Takashimaya)

Tofu gelato might sound a little weird at first, but trust me, it’s good good. With traditional Korean tofu-making techniques, Tofu G makes their tofu and gelato in-house every day. The different flavours are then put on display in interesting mini churners that continually fold the mixture over and over to keep texture consistent. As a result, their gelato is rich, creamy, and thick, making it feel like an indulgent treat without the guilty aftermath.

13 • Nakajima Suisan

(Photo: Google Reviews)

This store always has a long queue, and for good reason. Nakajima Suisan serves one of the best Japanese grilled fish in Singapore, with quality rivalling actual restaurants in Japan. Their meal sets are pretty value-for-money, too, ranging from $10 to $20 for a ginormous portion of fish complete with rice, miso soup, salad, and pickled vegetables.

Waiting time can go up to 1 hour, so make sure to arrive early or drop by during off-peak hours!

14 • Peck

(Photo: Wanderlog)

Follow the heavenly aroma of freshly-baked bread and you’ll reach Peck, a bakery specialising in artisan yet affordable Italian-style breads and confectioneries. They originated from Italy but are now managed under Four Leaves (the evergreen classic), so quality here is always consistent and fresh. Besides the more common mini pizzas and croissants, Peck Bakery also has focaccia, ciabatta, and cannoli, ranging from $2 to $5. Their Chocolate Cannolo ($2.20) is my personal favourite here – a flaky, buttery danish roll with a delightfully smooth custard filling.
