Sick fits, good art, and more: your guide to Haji Lane

Thanks to its prime real estate right next to Bugis and vibrant youth culture, Haji Lane remains one of the coolest places to be, even as emerging hangout spots like Maxwell and Joo Chiat Road threaten to out-swag it. But amidst all the jokes about its art school-coded clientele, the street rewards those who linger with cool finds, colourful sights, and more.

Haji Lane’s pedestrianised streets have engraved themselves into my mind over many years and countless ootd fit pics snapped there. But if you’re worried about looking like a lost child amongst the thrift shop hunters and photobooth addicts who’ve turned it into their stomping grounds, don’t be — I’ve put together a list of the best this street has to offer, so that you can make the most of your Haji Lane voyage.

01 • Snap photos with iconic street art

The first thing you’ll notice in Haji Lane is the art—it’s everywhere! The walls and shophouses are covered in massive, vibrant murals from local and international artists. Just tell me where else you can see a building-sized Samsui woman right across a similarly gargantuan Ultraman. It's the perfect spot to get inspired and snap some stunning photos.

02 • Hunt for unique fashion at independent boutiques

Haji Lane is famous for its independent boutiques, a refreshing change from big shopping malls. Shops like Takara House and Vintagewknd offer curated selections of apparel and accessories, many of which are pre-loved. Whether you're looking for a unique outfit or just want to shop sustainably, it's the perfect place to hunt for that perfect statement piece.

03 • Snap some pics at a self-photo studio

This is such a fun way to capture memories with friends or your partner. Haji Lane has several self-photo studios, like Photoism, where you get a private room, a remote, and a bunch of fun props. It's a no-pressure way to get high quality, professional-looking photos. If you’re looking for something a little more fun, Solace Airlines has several airplane-themed sets that are perfect for acting like you’re in your very own Kpop MV.

04 • Enjoy authentic Mexican food at Piedra Negra

(Photo: Blu Jaz Cafe)

Right at the start of Haji Lane, you'll find Piedra Negra, a Mexican eatery that stands out even amidst the bustle of Haji Lane thanks to its colourful facade. With a menu full of authentic eats, you could point at the menu blindfolded and still have a good time (while I lack personal experience in this department, I once bore witness to a tourist doing this before being pleasantly surprised by the party-sized bowl of tacos that was wheeled out to his table afterwards). But a real meal here would be incomplete without a serving of the restaurant’s signature guacamole, made-to-order right at your table.

05 • Make your own leather accessories at Crafune

(Photo: Crafune)

I absolutely love the feel of well-made leather products, so imagine my shock when I stepped into Crafune and saw enough of the material to make a cow cry. Bags, wallets, accessories — you name it, and this store’s got it in tan. If you want to make a weekend of it, they’ve even got a series of workshops that’ll reward your patience with a genuine leather trinket to call your own.

06 • Grab a pick-me-up at Coffee Donkee

All this walking needs fuel! At Haji Lane, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to places to recharge. My personal favourite is Coffee Donkee, an understated cafe that you might miss if you’re not looking out for the hanging swing at its doorstep. With just enough room to swing a cat and a constant inflow of imported Japanese beans, it’s a great place to unwind over some of the best artisanal coffee this side of the island. Before you leave, don’t forget to take a peek at the mini zen garden, and grab a bag of your own beans for the road.

If you’re looking for a more affordable cup and you’ve got some CDC vouchers to spare, there are also a few cafes just a short drive away that will be more than happy to slake your thirst.

07 • Huff some floofs at a pet cafe

(Photo: Secret Singapore)

If your idea of a break smells less like coffee grounds and more like fur, never fret. Meomi Cat Cafe and What the Pug are here to make sure you get the hit of fluffy goodness you need. The latter even holds the honour of being Singapore’s only pug cafe! Just be sure to book your spots early, as these celebri-squishies have hordes of adoring fans lining up to pet them on most days.
