What you can do to avoid ERP costs

ERP rates typically fall between $0.50 and $6 per gantry, with increased pricing during peak hours. Passing through multiple gantries can then add up to be very costly. Here are some tips to lower and even avoid ERP costs.

01 • Route planning

Embracing technology can significantly simplify your navigation through Singapore’s ERP zones. GPS and navigation apps like Google Maps and Waze are essential for conquering this urban challenge as they pinpoint ERP gantries, help you avoid tolls, and offer real-time traffic updates.

These apps filter out tolled routes, reveal alternatives, and suggest optimised paths by evaluating ERP costs and traffic conditions. For a more in-depth look at the best GPS and navigation apps, check out our guide on the top driving apps.

The last thing you should do is assume that the most direct route is cost-effective. Explore alternative routes that pass through fewer ERP zones or travel during non-peak hours. This strategy can save money and provide a more scenic and less congested journey.

02 • Off-peak travel

ERP rates fluctuate based on time and location. The highest rates usually fall in the morning hours between 8am to 9.30am, and in the evening from 5.30pm to 7pm. Depending on the gantry and which direction you’re heading, rates can go up to $6!

If you plan wisely and travel during off-peak hours, you can save on ERP costs and time if you avoid peak hour congestion. Consider starting your workday before or after peak periods to beat the rush and reduce your ERP expenses.

03 • Carpooling and carsharing

Carpooling is a great way to split ERP costs, reduce traffic congestion, and lower the overall environmental impact of commuting. If you have colleagues or friends who live nearby and work at similar hours, consider sharing rides with them. Sharing the cost of ERP charges, fuel, and parking can significantly reduce your expenses while fostering relationships.

04 • ERP-free Sundays

Instead of driving out on weekdays during peak hours, drive out on Sundays when there’s no ERP! Even though parking gets pricier on Sundays, don’t let it deter you from heading out. Check out our guide on free parking in Singapore.

Additionally, if you’re heading to the CBD to run errands or catch up with loved ones, we’ve got a guide on parking in the CBD just for you.

05 • Public transport

Singapore boasts one of the world’s most efficient and well-connected public transportation systems. Opting for the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and buses presents a dual advantage as it’s a convenient and wallet-friendly alternative to driving. Public transport also reduces your carbon footprint, creating a more sustainable future.

You also don’t need to worry about ERP charges. Explore the various public transit options available and see how they can fit into your daily commute.

Paying your ERP

The last thing you want to do is skip out on paying ERP as you’ll be charged with a violation and will need to pay the charge plus an additional administrative fee. You can pay your ERP fee using either a backend payment service or a stored-value card inserted into your IU (In-vehicle Unit). Check out our guide to find out where to buy stored value cards such as the NETS CashCard, NETS Motoring card, or EZ-Link card.

If you don’t even have an IU, there’s a penalty of $70.00 for each operating ERP gantry you drive through.

ERP rates are reviewed every 6 months, so stay updated on the latest rates if you use stored-value cards to ensure you always have enough to pay for your ERP charges. With foresight, budgeting, and the occasional change in your travel routine, you can navigate the city smoothly while keeping your finances on track.
