Hungry for something good? If you’re in Junction 8, you should be. Junction 8 is the shining crown jewel of Bishan. Since the mall is located right in the heart of the neighbourhood, it often draws a massive crowd of students and office workers, yet the variety of food makes every visit worth the effort.

01 Indulge in chewy treats at Mister Donut

Chewy and sweet. Originally from Japan, Mister Donut brought its iconic Pon De Ring to local shores several years ago, and they’re just as good as the day they first arrived. I remember standing in line for thirty minutes just to get my hands on the classic glazed version, and let me tell you, that mochi-like texture is unlike anything else you will find in a typical bakery.

Because they use tapioca flour in the dough, each bite has a delightful bounce that keeps you coming back for more. If you’re a fan of chocolate, you must try the double-chocolate version, as the richness of the cocoa perfectly complements the sugar coating.

02 Savour roasted goodness at Dian Xiao Er

(Photo: Capitaland)

Looking for a family feast? This is the place. Dian Xiao Er is legendary for its herbal roast duck. Whenever my parents visit, we always order the Duck Roasted with Angelica Herb because the skin is consistently crispy while the meat stays incredibly juicy and infused with a deep, earthy aroma that fills the entire table.

Carefully prepared over several hours, the ducks are roasted to golden perfection. You should drizzle the remaining herbal gravy over your rice. Pure liquid gold. While the mall can be busy, the service here is usually quite efficient, making it a reliable choice for a hearty lunch.

03 Enjoy European fusion at Ambush

(Photo: Miss Tam Chiak)

Fast and flavorful. Ambush offers a casual dining experience that blends European classics with a modern twist. I recently tried their Salmone & Sausages set, which comes with a generous slab of grilled salmon and savoury chicken sausages. Take note: the sausages here are CHONKY, so maybe skip the carbs if you order them (although you’d be missing out on the al dente pasta).

Although the restaurant is situated in an open area of the mall, the atmosphere remains cozy enough for a quick catch-up with your best mates. For those who enjoy a bit of everything on one plate, this eatery provides excellent value without compromising on quality.

04 Grab a world-famous burger at Shake Shack

(Photo: Shake Shack)

This is where you go for a real treat. Shake Shack changed the burger game in Singapore, and having a branch right in Bishan is a total win. When I first visited this outlet, I went straight for the Shack Stack because it combines a cheeseburger with a crisp-fried portobello mushroom filled with melted cheese. And honestly? That first bite was so decadent I nearly forgot that my doctor chided me for not cutting down on triglycerides one week earlier.

Freshly made every single day, their crinkle-cut fries are the ultimate sidekick. Love their signature Concrete custards? Try Junction 8’s exclusive "Who 8 My Cookie?" flavour, featuring caramelised cookies blended into rich vanilla custard.

05 Experience food on a train at Genki Sushi

(Photo: Daniel Food Diary)

Love trains? You’ll love this. Genki Sushi uses a fully functional Kousoku Express system to deliver your food right to your seat on a miniature shinkansen. When I brought my younger cousin here for his birthday, he was so mesmerised by the little locomotives that he almost forgot to eat the Nigiri Sushi they brought to him. What wasn’t as cute was how he kept negging us to order more stuff so he could see the train again 🥲

If you’re in a rush to catch a movie at the cinema upstairs, this spot is perfect because you can order via your phone and watch your plates zoom across the track in seconds.

06 Taste flame-seared meats at Aburi-EN

(Photo: Aburi-EN)

Smoky and satisfying. This place is a haven for meat lovers. Aburi-EN specialises in the art of flame-searing, which brings out a nice, slightly smoky flavour in their sashimi.

If you’re lucky, you can catch a glimpse of the chefs expertly torching your beef. Because they use high-quality Hokkaido rice, every grain holds up well to the rich sauces drizzled over the bowl.

07 Fill up on huge portions at Washoku Goen

(Photo: Washoku Goen)

Are you starving? You need to visit Washoku Goen. Located within the food court, this stall is famous for its massive Japanese curry rice plates. When I ordered the Double Katsu Curry, I was genuinely shocked by the size of the portion. The plates here are big enough to rival Monster Planet, and are just as nice to chow down on. Just make sure you have a friend to help you finish the plate!
